Exploring the FN 509: A comprehensive review
The FN 509 series of pistols, developed by FN Herstal, offers a modern take on striker-fired handguns and has become a popular choice among enthusiasts and professionals alike. Let’s take a closer look at what makes the FN 509 a noteworthy contender in today’s crowded handgun market.
Origins and evolution
The FN 509 emerged from FN’s entry into the US Army’s Modular Handgun System (MHS) program. Though ultimately not selected, FN wisely repurposed the development into the civilian and law enforcement market, creating a pistol series known for its reliability and adaptability. The original 509 has since expanded into a diverse lineup, including full-size, Midsize, Compact, MRD, Tactical, and LS Edge variants, catering to a wide range of shooting needs.
Ergonomics and design
The FN 509 boasts a comfortable and ergonomic grip, designed to provide a secure hold in various conditions. The grip features aggressive texturing and interchangeable backstraps, allowing shooters to customize the fit to their hand size and preferences. The ambidextrous controls, including the slide stop and magazine release, make the FN 509 user-friendly for both left and right-handed shooters. The slides are also equipped with front and rear serrations, enhancing manipulation and ensuring a positive grip even with gloves or in wet environments.
Performance and reliability
The FN 509 features a striker-fired action, resulting in a consistent and reliable trigger pull. The trigger, a hinged design similar to the S&W M&P series, offers a positive break and tactile reset, enabling faster follow-up shots. The FN 509 also incorporates a low bore axis, which helps mitigate muzzle flip and improves accuracy during rapid fire. Furthermore, the FN 509 is known for its excellent reliability, with reports of thousands of rounds fired without malfunctions. It is built to withstand harsh conditions and has been tested to handle various ammunition types, including +P loads.
Versatility and customization
The FN 509 offers several features that enhance its versatility and allow for customization. Many models, especially the Tactical and MRD variants, include an optics mounting system that supports a wide range of red dot sights. This allows for quicker target acquisition and improved precision, particularly at longer distances. Some models also come with threaded barrels, enabling the attachment of suppressors or other muzzle devices, catering to those seeking a quieter shooting experience. The FN 509 can also be customized with aftermarket triggers, sights, and other accessories to further personalize the shooting experience.
Conclusion
Overall, the FN 509 is a well-rounded pistol that combines reliability, accuracy, and versatility. Its ergonomic design, ambidextrous controls, and modular features make it adaptable to various shooters and applications, from concealed carry and home defense to competitive shooting. While the trigger may not be everyone’s favorite compared to some competitors, the FN 509’s overall performance, durability, and robust feature set make it a solid choice for those seeking a modern and dependable handgun. Considering its competitive price point and the ability to customize it to individual preferences, the FN 509 is certainly worth considering for your next firearm purchase.
